Viet Cong
The Viet Cong was a political group in South Vietnan and Cambodia that faught the United States and South Vietnamese governments during the Vietname War in 1959 and ended in 1975. It had guerrilla and regular army units. Many soldiers were recruited in Sout Vietnam, but others were attached to the PAVN. The NLF called for southern Vietnamese to "overthrow the camouflaged colonial regiment of the American imperialists" and to make "efforts toward the peaceful unification."
The Viet Minh became the government of North Vietnam and communist forces regrouped there. About 90,000 men were evacuated to the north while 5,000 to 10,000 cadre remained in the South. Disagreeing that a free election was not possible under the conditions that existed in communist-held territory, Diệm announced on July 1955 that the scheduled election on reunification would not be held.
